Responding to reports: – Blinken confirms Chinese intelligence in Cuba

Date:

The Chinese government uses the island of Cuba to collect intelligence. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this in a report from the Wall Street Journal on Monday. China is said to have considered locations worldwide, according to Blinken, the armament in Cuba should have taken place in 2019.

When US President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, the new administration was briefed on China’s efforts around the world to expand its logistics base. It should go to gathering information for military purposes. “They were considering a number of locations around the world for this expansion, including intelligence gathering facilities in Cuba,” Blinken said.

Interception of information in the US?
Blinken was responding to Wall Street Journal reports in recent days that the governments of China and Cuba had reached a secret agreement to set up a new listening facility on the island. This should be south of the US state of Florida in the Caribbean. Given its proximity to the US coast, this would allow the Chinese government to potentially intercept electronic communications in parts of the US as well. American shipping could also be tracked with it.

The White House initially called the report “inaccurate,” but later added that it was an ongoing problem and not a new development. More needs to be done to counter China’s efforts, Blinken said. The US government has since contacted governments considering having Chinese listening stations in their countries. The US government will monitor the situation and take further steps, she said. Blinken cannot go into details.
