A 54-year-old from the US state of Missouri actually wanted to treat himself to a special delicacy – but the man paid for it with his life. The oysters he bought at a store were contaminated with flesh-eating bacteria – he eventually died from the infection.
The tragic incident took place in the city of Manchester near St. Louis. The man had bought oysters at The Fruit Stand & Seafood store. But these also contain the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus – the pathogen is usually found in warm coastal waters, especially in summer.
After eating the oysters, the 54-year-old fell ill and was hospitalized. But for the man, all help came too late. He died Thursday from the infection caused by the bacteria.
The business community is probably not at fault
However, the store would not be responsible for the man’s death. The St. Louis County Department of Health stated, “There is no evidence that the store did anything to contaminate the oysters. They were likely already contaminated when the facility received them.” All remaining oysters have been seized by authorities as a precaution, and shoppers have been warned not to eat oysters purchased there.
Every third infection is fatal
It is now being investigated where the contaminated oysters come from. The bacterium causes abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever and chills in humans. Infection usually occurs when eating raw or undercooked oysters and other shellfish. An infection is fatal in one in three people. According to US media, Vibrio vulnificus is responsible for 95 percent of all seafood-related deaths.
