Protest in Innsbruck – shower for activists, doctor had to identify himself

Date:

The climate activists of the last generation clearly mean it: a whole week of protest has been announced in Innsbruck – Monday and Tuesday there were already blockades. On day two, the entire Hötting district was paralyzed. What else awaits the residents of Innsbruck and the thousands of commuters for the rest of the week? The FPÖ is demanding an amendment to the Penal Code and the traffic regulations. The ÖVP, on the other hand, started a distribution campaign under the motto “Tackling instead of picking”.

The last generation still doesn’t show its cards. No one – apart from the activists themselves – knows when and where roads will be blocked the next day. And so on Wednesday and the following days, many Innsbruckers and commuters will probably be stuck in traffic and late for work.

Blockades and march in the city center
The week-long protest began on Monday: After the Haller Strasse/Anton-Rauch-Strasse intersection was blocked, a protest march followed into the city center. The unannounced meeting lasted from 7 a.m. to almost 11 a.m.! On Tuesday morning, the activists went one step further and paralyzed the entire Hötting district. There were sit-ins in Riedgasse, Karl-Innerebner-Straße and Speckweg. It was over at 9:15 am.

Doctors had to identify themselves
Public transport and emergency vehicles are waved through. Even a doctor had to identify himself first to be allowed through. Happened on Karl-Innerebner-Strasse in the west of the city on Tuesday (see Twitter video below). There was also a “shower” there for the activists, because a roadside assistance employee was doing his job.

FPÖ calls for tougher sentences
The PVV in particular is a huge thorn in the side of climate activists. The Tyrolean FPÖ called again on Tuesday for changes to the penal code and traffic rules. “People who deliberately stick to federal, state and municipal roads and thus impede the smooth flow of road traffic should finally be able to be punished criminally or administratively,” said Tyrolean FP boss Markus Abwerzger.

“Tackling instead of pecking”
The Tyrolean Youth Party carried out a distribution campaign during the protest on Tuesday. A small breakfast was distributed to motorists who were stuck in traffic, under the motto “Continue instead of bullying”. “The commuters in particular have no understanding at all that they are stuck in traffic because of the climate stickers. We want to slow down climate change together, but staying on the street will not help,” emphasized Tyrolean JVP boss Sophia Kircher.

Police hands were tied
According to the police, the meeting authority was unable to dissolve the meeting. “An official dissolution and any forced execution of this dissolution can only take place after strict consideration of the harmed legal interests against the fundamental right of freedom of assembly, and only in the event of massive impediments or disturbances,” said a broadcast. Waiting times or local handicaps are no reason for this. This also applies to meetings that have not been registered 48 hours in advance. 30 complaints were submitted at the Monday meeting and 20 at the Tuesday meeting.
