Apparently the penny has dropped in Carinthia: fake police officers tried to extort five Carinthians in the past 24 hours – but without success!
Phone scammers are up to mischief again in Carinthia. The scam started on Monday evening when the crooks made a large number of phone calls – aiming to steal money from their victims! To do this, they posed as police officers and superintendents of investigations to get behind cash. They focused on several elderly people in nursing homes or residential care centers in Wolfsberg.
No prey for scammers
The next day it continued: “At around 12.30 a 63-year-old man from the Spittal/Drau district was contacted,” the police said. Again, the callers posed as police officers and claimed that the man’s son had been arrested. “The 63-year-old did not respond to further calls.” Shortly afterwards, a 57-year-old from the same neighborhood received a similar call. But when she said she wanted to call the police station to ask, the scammers cut off contact.
In all cases, the perpetrators spoke with a High German dialect. Fortunately, no payment or collection has taken place in any of these cases. “Further investigations are being carried out to clarify the facts,” said the real police officers.
