Train drivers beware! Due to a dike fire, the Brenner route in Tyrol between Innsbruck and Matrei had to be closed on Wednesday afternoon. Trains will probably only be able to run there again in the early evening.
At 11:40 am, the Brenner route had to be closed because of the fire on the dike near Ellebogen. In the early afternoon, extinguishing work was still underway, ÖBB spokesman Christoph Gasser-Mair told the “Krone”.
Buses instead of regional trains, long-distance traffic stopped
A track replacement service for local trains has been set up between Innsbruck and Matrei. Long-distance trains initially had to wait for the closure.
Damage to the rail infrastructure?
The duration of the ban could not be estimated at first. “Once the fire is extinguished, our technicians must first examine the infrastructure for possible damage,” says Gasser-Mair. Train traffic will probably only be possible again from the early evening.
The Brenner route was already interrupted last Saturday. The reason for this was a tree in the overhead line. There were sometimes huge delays in travel.
