A majority of MEPs voted to enlarge the European Parliament. Now only the 27 heads of state and government of the EU need to agree.
Since Britain left the European Union, only 705 of the 751 seats in the European Parliament have been filled. Now the Citizens’ Chamber of Europe wants to grow again with the European elections in 2024. A majority of MEPs voted in Strasbourg on Thursday for an expansion of their house from 705 to 716 seats.
If the EU’s 27 heads of state and government agree to the project, Austria could soon receive an additional mandate.
19 MEPs so far
The Netherlands and Spain will each receive two more mandates; Denmark, Finland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ireland, Latvia and Austria each have an additional seat. So far, 19 MEPs have represented Austria in the EU Parliament.
The final decision rests with the 27 EU heads of state or government, who could discuss the project at their meeting in Brussels at the end of June.
