A man in England has been sentenced to life in prison for pushing and killing his partner’s nine-year-old son under water. The mother has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for manslaughter and cruelty to a child, the PA news agency reported from the courtroom in Coventry on Thursday. According to an autopsy, the boy had suffered more than 50 injuries before his death in the cold water of a bathtub.
Neighbors intervened several times
The case also casts a bad light on the authorities: the mother’s 41-year-old partner is said to have regularly abused the child for years. Neighbors had repeatedly alerted the police, including seeing the boy forced to stand still in the yard “like a statue” when temperatures were low. Just six months before his death in February 2021, a man had alerted police that the couple “did something bad in the bathroom” with the child.

According to the verdict, the abuse was part of “sadistic” punishments the boy was subjected to. This included beating him with a belt and other objects, in addition to submerging his head in cold water. A social services plan to prevent the mother’s partner from living in the same house in the town near Worcester was flouted.
