Operations continued through the night and are currently continuing without any results, so the official balance remains that of at least 78 killed and 104 rescued, all men, including eight minors.
While the search for possible survivors continues this Friday after the sinking of a ship carrying migrants off the coast of Greece, hopes of finding more castaways alive are fading in a tragedy that may have left hundreds dead.
“At this point, it is extremely difficult to find anyone alive,” said a Coast Guard spokeswoman.
Operations continued through the night without producing any results, so the official tally remains that of at least 78 dead and 104 rescued, all men, including eight minors.
According to some local media, between 500 and 700 people traveled aboard the 30-meter boat. There were about 100 children and many women in the hold of the old fishing boat, according to testimonies of the survivors collected by said media.
Currently, five ships, including a naval frigate and a helicopter, are continuing their operations in the area, hampered by high winds.
According to the testimonies of the rescued, reported by the Greek media, the boat had departed from Egypt, stopped in eastern Libya and then continued on to Italy. Early Wednesday morning it sank after capsizing southwest of the Greek peninsula of Peloponnese.
