An unusually strong earthquake hit western France on Friday evening. Minister of the Environment Christophe Béchu spoke of “one of the strongest earthquakes on the French mainland”. The earthquake had a magnitude between 5.3 and 5.8.
Tremors were felt from Rennes in the north to Bordeaux in the southwest. The epicenter was between the coastal town of La Rochelle and Niort further inland.
One person is said to have been slightly injured and in some places there was also property damage. There was also a power outage in some places.
“I thought the floor was collapsing”
“I jumped up, the whole apartment shook,” said an eyewitness at the scene. The tremors lasted for a few seconds. “I was absolutely terrified. I live on the third floor. I thought the floor was collapsing.”
