A major search operation took place in the Wachau in Lower Austria on Saturday afternoon. A 33-year-old sank in the Danube. Police and fire boats and an executive helicopter were deployed.
Dramatic scenes took place on Saturday near Weißenkirchen in the Krems district. An Afghan wanted to go swimming in the Danube and drifted away. He called for help and an off-duty police officer immediately jumped in to rescue the man. Unfortunately not successful.

A major search operation followed the incident at the rolling ferry. A large contingent of helpers from the police, ambulance and fire brigade was deployed. However, the search yielded no results. It is feared that the man drowned in the Danube.
According to the executive, the 33-year-old, who has applied for asylum in Germany, visited friends in Weißenkirchen.
