After the dispute with Slovenia: do we need a new text for the Styrian national anthem? Many ‘Krone’ readers are happy with the White Stars’ proposal, but it is also a bull’s eye for the state leadership.
The ‘Krone’ story about the new text proposal for the Styrian national anthem provoked many reactions. As reported, white-green music greats Walter and Werner Reischl of the legendary White Stars have rewritten the controversial lines of the Dachstein song, which has sparked a serious diplomatic dispute with Slovenia in recent weeks.
Instead of “Wendenland at the bottom of the Sav”, as in the original, their version reads “I look into the thermal baths”, and instead of “Wineland in the Drav valley” it reads “Wineland full golden wine”.
“No change planned”
According to many responses from readers and users, the Styrians could certainly live with this adjustment. However, there is little approval from those in charge of politics. “A change to the state song is not planned in the government program,” said the office of Governor Mario Kunasek (FPÖ).
The answer from his deputy Manuela Khom (ÖVP) was almost word for word: “An adjustment is not planned in this legislative period.” Of course, a decision can also be made on whether to anchor the national anthem in the state constitution, as planned in the coalition program – this requires a two-thirds majority in the state parliament. But there will be no approval from the opposition.
