2.6 tons of cocaine on board – Colombia: navy finds drug submarine in the Pacific Ocean

Date:

A submarine with cocaine worth almost 88 million dollars (about 82 million euros) has been seized off the coast of Colombia. The Colombian Navy had discovered the self-built vehicle – a so-called semi-submersible – floating in the Pacific Ocean over the weekend…

On Sunday, soldiers found 2.6 tons of cocaine and the bodies of two smugglers who died from toxic engine exhaust aboard the 17-meter smuggling submarine. Two other men were injured and rescued.

After finding the semi-submersible, military personnel found “two people in poor health outside the ship,” according to a statement from Colombia’s defense ministry.

U-boat was en route to Central America
According to the Colombian authorities, the submarine was en route to Central America. Submarines carrying drug supplies are repeatedly seized off the coast of Colombia – the South American country is considered the world’s largest producer of cocaine.

Record amount of cocaine seized
Last year, Colombia seized more cocaine than any year before. Security forces seized a whopping 671 tons of the drug in 2022, surpassing the 2021 figure by about 1.7 tons.

Cocaine production and trafficking is considered the main cause of an armed conflict in Colombia that has now lasted nearly six decades and has so far claimed more than 450,000 lives and millions of people displaced.
