CPR – Tyrolean mountain rescuers involved in UEFA project

Date:

A great honor for the local mountain rescue team: this week they were allowed to train the Swiss U-21 national football team in Zillertal in CPR. For this, the mountain rescuers are presented in a UEFA film.

Review: At the EM 2021, Danish international Christian Eriksen collapsed during a match with cardiac arrest. Caregivers were able to resuscitate him. The European Football Association, UEFA, took this dramatic incident as an opportunity to collaborate with the European Society for Resuscitation (ERC). In the future, all national teams will be required to complete basic training in CPR before a major event.

Own ERC short rescue center
And this is where the Tyrolean mountain rescue service comes into play, which has more than 20 CPR instructors and thus an ERC course rescue center.

Swiss trained in Zell
“The Austrian Council for Resuscitation, which is part of the ERC, has approached us,” says Sepp Burger, state physician of the Tyrolean mountain rescue service. “We were asked to take over this basic training for the Swiss U-21 national team, who were staying at training camp in Zell am Ziller this week for the European Championship.” “Of course we immediately agreed,” remembers Gregor Franke. , Head of the ERC Course Center.

Ambition continued to grow
Nine instructors took care of the approximately 40 strong Swiss entourage – from the kit manager over the coaching team to the kickers. “We worked in small groups,” says Burger. “The Swiss had to learn and practice chest compressions on dolls.” In the beginning, the enthusiasm of the young Swiss stars, some of whom already played in the German Bundesliga, was rather limited. However, interest and ambition grew steadily. “In the end, they were excited about our last game. Three groups had to be resuscitated, the puppets gave feedback. Team spirit and competitive thinking emerged,” says Burger with a smile.

Mountain rescue through film in the EM stadium
The Tyrolean mountain rescuers gave free lessons. They will be part of a commercial that will be shown in Germany’s EM stadiums during halftime in 2024. Thousands of spectators then see what the mountain rescue services of Tyrol are doing.
