“Who does something like that?” Peter Ebner, high gardener of the Salzburg Mirabelgarten, can only shake his head. He no longer understands the world the next day. Unknown Vandalen drove their disaster in the popular dwarf garden on Monday evening.
They let their anger go wild and tore one of the well -known stone sculptures. The more than 320 year old dwarf made of the best Untersberger -Marmer is now on the ground. The left stone foot is broken, just like the massive base. “It takes a lot of strength, you probably can’t do it alone,” says Ebner.
The fact is: the strangers drunk well for their vande act. When high gardener Ebner and the police visited the crime scene on Monday, there was an empty vodka bottle and various beer cans near the broken dwarf. “Actually, the dwarf garden is always locked in the evening. If you want, you can come in,” says Ebner. There is no video supervision in the oasis of the room that is also popular with the locals and tourists. The perpetrators were therefore able to flee, the police are now investigating.
According to the first assessments, experts can restore the valuable statue. “The removal will not be easy. The broken dwarf weighs around 600 kilograms, so we definitely need a tap,” says the high gardener.
Dwarf has a value of 500,000 euros
The battered dwarf is one of the many theater gnomes who go back to templates from the French engraver Jacques Callot. They were made in the 18th century, later they were auctioned – before it gradually bought the city in the early 1920s. The stone dwarfs have an estimated value of more than 500,000 euros each.
It was not until April of this year that two new sculptures were revealed, both copies of the valuable originals. So 19 dwarfs in Mirabelell Castle-Voordat de Brutale Vodka Vandalen had left.
