It feels good – parrot “Burli” was released from the mini cage

Date:

The parrot “Burli”, which was very popular with its owners but was not kept in a way that was appropriate for the species, has now been taken away by the authorities. The red-fronted amazon had spent thirty years in a much too small area in Upper Austria. Now the bird is – perhaps only temporarily – in Vienna. During the examination of “Burli” a big surprise came to light!

After the ‘Krone’ report about the red-fronted amazon parrot ‘Burli’, the authorities have now acted quickly. On Thursday, the approximately 40-year-old bird was taken from its owners in St. Pantaleon and brought by the animal rescue team to the ARGE Parrot Protection shelter in Vienna. ‘Burli’ is currently staying in a quarantine station there, where he clearly feels at ease.

“Very sweet and tame”
“The Amazon has survived the move well and does not seem apathetic or stressed,” says ARGE President Nadja Ziegler. The parrot arrived at his new home around 9 p.m., showed appetite and curiously explored his aviary. “He is very sweet and tame.” “Burli” is also loud and needs to be communicated. “So far, everything has gone smoothly,” says Ziegler.

A detailed assessment by the official veterinarian is still pending. In any case, ‘Burli’s’ inability to fly is irreversible. “In the past, for whatever reason, his wrists and bones were amputated.” This prevented him from flying. “That’s why he’s very narrow and has no pectoral muscles,” Ziegler explains.

Surprise Over ‘Burlis’ Gender Control
The goal now is to get the bird used to other birds. “A blue-fronted amazon parrot is also housed in a neighboring aviary at the quarantine station. They can hear and see each other.” There was also a surprise: “He” is not a man, but a woman!

Not too late to return
It is unclear whether “Burli” will spend the rest of his life in Vienna. The elderly couple from whom he was taken still have the opportunity to acquire a species-appropriate aviary and a partner bird within a certain period of time. “It is crucial that he is kept in a species-appropriate manner.”
