On approach to land in Chicago, Illinois, a Boeing 767’s evacuation slide detached on Monday and crashed into a residential area in the city’s northwest. She fell on the roof of a house, luckily no one was hurt.
The passenger plane of the US airline United Airlines was coming from Switzerland when the inflatable evacuation slide fell from the plane on approach to Chicago O’Hare International Airport for reasons that are still unclear.
The home’s owner, Patrick Devitt, told broadcaster ABC7 that he dragged the evacuation slide from his backyard to the front of the street. His son and father-in-law were having lunch in the kitchen around 12:15 p.m. when they heard a loud bang, the man said.
The emergency slide damaged some roof tiles, the downspout of the gutter and a screen on the kitchen window. They called 911, and police and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials were there within 30 minutes, Devitt said.
Machine landed safely at the airport
According to the FAA, a maintenance team at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport discovered that an evacuation slide was missing from a United Airlines Boeing 767 that landed safely. It appears to be the slide in question. It is reported that an investigation is now underway as to why the airliner lost her.
It is not the first time that a Boeing 767 loses an evacuation slide. Similar incidents occurred in Phoenix at Sky Harbor Airport in 2016 and in Boston at Logan Airport in 2019, ABC7 reports on its website.
