While the first-indicted Lower Austrian describes step by step how he stole and offered for sale two campers together with a 49-year-old, he speaks of a client to whom the two were completely subservient. Yet there is a conviction.
“I had no intention of becoming a criminal” – gambling addiction, drug debt and unpaid child support led the 33-year-old to steal two mobile homes with his 49-year-old accomplice. The two then offered the vehicles for sale on the Internet with counterfeit license plates, registration certificates and papers. After all, they were worth more than 112,000 euros.
Caught in the act
It worked for one of the mobile homes: they sold it for 50,000 euros. But when he checked in, he found out that the RV had been reported stolen. The second time, the suspects were caught “within a hair’s breadth”, says the prosecutor of the regional court in Korneuburg (Lower Austria). The purchase contract had already been drawn up, the only thing missing was the signature. Numerous registration certificates and other papers were subsequently found at the 49-year-old’s home – in the cistern of the toilet.
Scary customer?
But he wants all this from a third party. A “David” who gave him all the instructions and also provided the 49-year-old with the kitchen utensils. And why does the 33-year-old know nothing about this client, the judge wants to know: “Maybe he is afraid”, said the suspect.
But the jury does not believe him: for, among other things, the burglary in the two campers, the 49-year-old, who has been convicted five times, received five years in prison. His repentant accomplice 30 months – 10 of which are absolute. He now wants to fully concentrate on his family and pay his child’s alimony from now on: “I’ve never been a criminal! The past four months have opened my eyes.”
