French President Emmanuel Macron has shown his drink tolerance in a rugby team dressing room. He downed a bottle of beer in one gulp – the spectators of the bizarre action roared and jumped in the air with enthusiasm. This demonstration was not well received by the opposition: the politician was accused of displaying toxic masculinity.
The incident occurred as the Toulouse rugby union team secured a last-minute victory over La Rochelle to win the competition. Afterwards, Macron was invited to the winners’ dressing room – and had a beer there to celebrate the day. Then he proudly threw the empty bottle on the table.
Politician: “What does he want to prove to himself?”
“Toxic masculinity in the political leadership in one image,” French Green Party leader Sandrine Rousseau commented on this move. Socialist Senator Laurence Rossignol asked: “A beer on ex? What does he want to prove?” The newspaper “Liberation” recalled after the 2018 incident that Macron denounced binge drinking of young people “who get drunk on beer and liquor as quickly as possible,” the medium’s president was quoted as saying.
A party member defended the president on Twitter. “A president who shares the joy of 23 players and participates in their traditions. That’s all,” explains Jean-René Cazeneuve.
17 seconds for a Seidl
As the British newspaper ‘Guardian’ counted, Macron needed 17 seconds for the bottle of Corona beer. This was the beer brand of choice for the late right-wing president Jacques Chirac – some have speculated that this was an attempt by the president to draw closer to the right.
