In a new trial, Alexej Navalny is accused, among other things, of inciting and financing extremism. Nevertheless, Putin’s opponent is now taking action against his nemesis – announcing an “election campaign against the war”.
Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has announced a new campaign against Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We will campaign against the war. And to Putin. A long, tedious, arduous, but fundamentally important election campaign in which we will turn the people against war.”
Despite the ban on his movement, it could have a major impact through targeted messaging, as “every grandma now has WhatsApp and Telegram.”
Navalny, who is currently incarcerated, predicted the campaign would be labeled “illegal and subversive” by authorities. Nevertheless, they will use all their might to resist “the apparatus of war, corruption and stupidity”.
Navalny faces decades of imprisonment
Navalny responds to his lawyers on social media. A statement from the Russian government was not initially available. Russia’s next presidential election is scheduled for 2024. Putin has not yet announced whether he will stand again.
Before the statement, Navalny was in a new trial before a Russian court. He faces decades of additional prison time. The interrogation took place in a penal camp in Melekhovo, about 235 kilometers east of Moscow, where the 47-year-old is being held.
Opponent Putin threatens with the ‘truth’
This time he is accused of inciting and financing extremism and founding an extremist organization, among other things. The trial was initially broadcast on video in a room reserved for journalists, but was later continued with cameras. Concerns about safety were cited as the reason.
After the trial, Navalny explained, “Some people collect stamps. Others collect coins. And I have a growing collection of amazing lawsuits.” Now is the time to do something the Putin regime fears: “Tell the truth, spread the truth.” , thieves and hypocrites”.
Navalny has been in prison for two years
Navalny has been behind bars for more than two years. He has already been sentenced to a total of eleven and a half years in a penal colony. Navalny dismisses the allegations as fictitious to silence him. Human rights organizations and Western governments consider Navalny a political prisoner. The leadership in Moscow denies this. Navalny was arrested in January 2021.
In August 2020, he collapsed during a flight within Russia. First he was treated in Russia and then transferred to the Berlin Charité. There, poisoning with a nerve gas was diagnosed. The Moscow government has denied allegations that Russian authorities attempted to assassinate him.
