Venus Williams won in Birmingham at the age of 43

Venus Williams, With just turned 43 years old, he lost on Monday Camila Giorgi after more than three hours of play, for 7-6(5), 4-6 and 7-6(6)and debuted with success in Birmingham, the second tournament he plays this 2023.

The American, winner of seven Grand Slams, defeated Giorgi, twelve years younger than him and ranked among the 50 best in the world, despite a knee injury and a spectacular fall in the first set.

The Italian, known for his aggressiveness and his irregularity on the court, came back from two ‘breaks’ in the first set, to fall in the tiebreaker, and, after winning the second set, raised a 5-2 deficit in the third and a match point against the oldest of Williams.

Venus, in the ‘tie break’ of the third set, after three hours and 16 minutes of fighting and with limited movement due to physical discomfort, defeated the Italian and secured her second win since Wimbledon 2021.

Currently ranked 697 in the ranking, the American has played only three tournaments this year, in Auckland, where he made the second round, S’hertogenbosch, where he lost on his debut, and in this tournament in Birmingham, where he was in the second round.

The five-time Wimbledon winner will face the winner of the clash between Czech Linda Noskova and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the tournament’s second seed, in the next round.
