Shock for newbie – regulator frozen by diver at 36 meters depth

Date:

Dangerous incident on Sunday during diving training in the Plansee in the Ausserfern region of Tyrol: The regulator of a 37-year-old German suddenly froze during a deep dive. The dive instructor (58) reacted immediately and provided the air supply through a second exhaust. But then it froze too!

The fatal incident took place shortly after 12 p.m., according to police. The 37-year-old German was diving with the diving instructor (58), also from Germany, during his training in the Plansee, when the student’s regulator suddenly froze at a depth of 36 meters.

The dive instructor recognized the emergency immediately. “He responded immediately and presented the Safe air supply via a second outlet. Then both divers began the ascent,” the researchers said.

The second outlet also froze
But then it happened again! “This treat also froze. The dive instructor then brought his second regulator to the student diver,” police continued. Once on the surface, the 37-year-old was able to get out of the water on his own. “All he felt was a slight tingling sensation under his skin.”

Symptoms did not go away
The diver was eventually supplied with oxygen by a paramedic from the diving school who was present. After the German’s symptoms did not subside, the rescue chain was set in motion. The man was then flown by emergency medical helicopter to the clinic in Murnau, which he was able to leave in the evening unharmed.
