Migrant flow – Lampedusa has 1100 arrivals within 24 hours

Date:

The good weather favors the passage of migrants from North Africa to Italy. Since Monday, another 1,100 migrants have arrived on the Italian Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. There are currently 1,350 people in the island’s hotspot after 430 refugees were taken by ferry to Porto Empedocle in Sicily on Monday.

The government in Rome is preparing an international conference on immigration to take place before the summer recess. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said after a visit to Abu Dhabi that several African and Arab countries and institutions dealing with migration issues will participate. Tajani emphasized “the strategic friendship between Italy and the Emirates in all areas of foreign policy”. In early March, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the United Arab Emirates, the largest investor in Africa.

DNA database required
Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations are calling for the creation of a European DNA database to identify the victims of Mediterranean travel. “The lack of data on the identity of the dead is one of the great tragedies related to the migration crisis,” said Tareke Brhane, chair of the October 3 committee, which champions the rights of migrants.

“Refugee families want to know: ‘Are they alive or dead?’ When a natural disaster or, for example, a terrorist attack occurs, there are international rules to deal with the aftermath, identify the dead and collect the missing, and ensure that the rights of the deceased are respected. of fatalities during sea voyages across the Mediterranean, there is no such framework,” criticized Brhane.

More arrivals this year
More than 55,000 migrants have reached Italy by sea since the beginning of this year, according to the Interior Ministry in Rome. This is a significant increase from last year, when around 23,500 arrivals were registered in the same period. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the majority of migrants registered in Italy recently came from Tunisia via the Mediterranean. The most common countries of origin seeking protection in the first months of this year were Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Guinea and Egypt.
