As a result of increased Russian shelling, the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv has ordered the forced evacuation of families with children in several places. Further south, Russian forces also reported Ukrainian attacks near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
275 children in seven cities, including the city of Kupyansk, are affected by the evacuation order, the head of the regional administration, Oleh Synyehubov, told Telegram on Thursday. 89 children and their families had already followed an earlier recommendation and fled to safe areas.
According to Synjehubow, the refugees will be given shelter and support from international aid organizations.
Such coercive action also took place in October in parts of the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson along the Dnipro River, near the front. According to official information at the time, approximately 800 children were affected by the measure.
Attack near the nuclear power plant?
Fighting also continues in Zaporizhia. The Russian military says it has shot down nine Ukrainian drones near the occupied nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine. The attack around noon was intended, among other things, to disrupt the rotation of the observation team of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Russian Defense Ministry wrote in Telegram on Thursday. These statements cannot be independently verified.
Neither Kiev nor the IAEA have yet commented on the incident. The Russian military leadership has often spread proven false information in the past.
Last team change at the beginning of October
The IAEA observers in the power plant city of Enerhodar are monitoring the situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which Russian troops have occupied since last year, in a rotating capacity. The last team change took place in early October. New monitors from the Atomic Energy Agency were expected to arrive on Thursday, according to a senior Russian official.
Just a few weeks after the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, Moscow occupied the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in the city of Enerhodar in March 2022. Both warring sides repeatedly accused each other of shelling the facility. Warnings of a possible loss of control and nuclear catastrophe have been around for a long time.
