In a joint statement with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron stressed the need to strengthen “control of our external borders” on migration.
“We need to unite better on asylum and immigration to prevent further refugee tragedies,” Macron said in Paris on Tuesday.
The issue of the future of the EU was also raised at the meeting at the Elysée Palace. “We cannot allow a return to parameters that would be absolutely inadequate today: the challenge is to focus on investments: if we have made ourselves a priority, we cannot ignore these elements,” said Meloni.
“Investing in strategic matters for the EU cannot be treated like any other expenditure, we agree,” said the Italian prime minister. The reason for the visit to Paris is a tour by Melonis of European capitals to promote Rome’s candidacy for the World Expo 2030.
Ukraine is “supported in every way”
France and Italy jointly support Ukraine’s war effort. “There is no doubt that Italy and France will continue to support Ukraine in every possible way. If we didn’t, we would find a much more chaotic world. What Ukrainians are doing is also defending our freedom,” Meloni said.
She was “proud to announce with Macron” that the Franco-Italian Samp-T anti-aircraft shield in Ukraine is now “operational”.
Paris accused Meloni of “incompetence”.
In May, criticism of Italian refugee policy from Paris caused a stir. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled a planned visit to France at short notice in protest after French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin criticized Italy’s refugee policy. Darmanin had accused Meloni of “incompetence” in dealing with the increasing number of migrants arriving in Italy.
Meloni’s government, which promised a naval blockade in the Mediterranean and a massive reduction in the number of migrants during last year’s election campaign, is under pressure due to the high number of migrants arriving. More than 55,000 migrants have arrived in Italy since the beginning of the year, according to the Italian Ministry of the Interior – almost three times the number in the same period last year.
