At least 41 people have been killed in a fire and fight at a women’s prison in Honduras. According to reports, two rival youth gangs fought each other, including with blunt weapons.
After the fighting, a fire broke out on Tuesday morning (local time). According to official figures, at least 41 people were killed and another seven women had to be taken to hospital with injuries. Most of the victims suffered burns, it said. The investigation is still ongoing, a spokesman for the Attorney General of Honduras said. The affected prison is located in the town of Támara, about 35 kilometers northwest of the capital Tegucigalpa.
Organized crime was behind the incident, Deputy Security Minister Julissa Villanueva said. The fighting is said to have been fought by rival youth gangs Pandilla 18 and Mara Salvatrucha. Relatives of the victims gathered desperately in front of the prison, waiting for information.
Special committee introduced
Violence has occurred in several prisons in Honduras in recent weeks. The government of left-wing President Xiomara Castro has already appointed a special commission to deal with the prison crisis.
