In the United States, a pregnant woman was shot dead by her two-year-old son. The 31-year-old called 911 Friday after the incident, police chief David Smith told local Ohio media. The toddler was found to have had access to several loaded weapons.
“She explained that she was 33 weeks pregnant and her two-year-old accidentally shot her in the back.” The woman was taken to a hospital where the unborn child could not be saved despite an emergency caesarean section. Hours later, the mother also succumbed to her injuries.
The woman was conscious when police arrived and told officers that her son had somehow gotten into the normally locked bedroom and started playing with the gun. Police found a loaded 9mm handgun and two other loaded firearms on the bedside table.
US: More guns than people
In the United States, where there are about 400 million guns for about 330 million people, such tragedies happen again and again. In March, a three-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed her four-year-old sister in Texas.
In June 2022, a two-year-old boy shot his father with an improperly stowed gun. In August 2021, a two-year-old found a gun in a child’s backpack and shot his mother in the head while the mother was in the middle of a video conference.
