According to the first partial results, the parliamentary elections in Greece indicate a clear victory for the conservatives of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. New Democracy (ND) led by about 40 percent, according to data after about 75 percent of the vote had been counted. That means an absolute majority in the Greek electoral system. In second place followed the left-wing Syriza of ex-premier Alexis Tsipras with almost 18 percent.
In the first election at the end of May, the Conservatives won clearly, but failed to secure a sufficient majority and so rejected calls to form a coalition government. Since then, an interim government has ruled Greece under Prime Minister Ioannis Sarmas, the president of the Greek Court of Auditors. In the current elections there is again a bonus system, which helps the strongest party with extra seats in parliament.
Automatic bonus of 20 mandates
The electoral law provides for an automatic bonus of at least 20 seats for the party with the most votes in the 300-seat parliament. If New Democracy achieves about 40 percent in the final result, it can again rule alone with a comfortable majority in parliament. According to the Greek Ministry of the Interior, the turnout was around 50 percent.
According to the partial results, the previous opposition parties, especially Syriza, had to take heavy losses compared to the elections in May. On the other hand, several parties previously not represented in parliament performed surprisingly well, including the right-wing populist “Spartiates” (Spartans), the “Niki” (Victory) party, which focuses on the Orthodox Church, and the left nationalist party “Plefsi Eleftherias” (Freedom Race) of former parliament speaker Zoi Konstantopolou, a former Syriza politician.
