According to the order of the district fire brigade, the forest fire in Karlstein an der Thaya in Lower Austria last Thursday was “with a very high probability” caused by lightning. A large contingent of emergency services worked for hours to extinguish the fire.
More than 100 helpers were on duty in the sometimes impassable terrain to extinguish the fire. An imminent fire spread was prevented in time. The fire service reported on Monday that the lightning strike had already occurred about 24 hours before the outbreak of the fire.
Possible formation of cinders
It was probably the first to see a cinder formation in one of the rootstocks. Thursday’s strong winds likely aided the spread of the flames. A total of 14 fire brigades attended the scene.
