The military junta has ordered the destruction of more than 100 different types of narcotics, Myanmar’s Central Committee to Combat Drug Abuse (CCDAC) said Monday evening (local time). Cremation ceremonies took place in the largest city of Yangon (formerly Rangoon), as well as Mandalay and Taunggyi.
The illicit drug trade is booming in Southeast Asia. The United Nations warns of an increase in the production of opium, heroin and methamphetamine. The East Asian country is the second largest opium and heroin producer in the world after Afghanistan.
