A school trip to Linz almost ended in disaster on Monday afternoon. Two 16-year-old schoolgirls cooled off in the Danube, were swept away by the strong current and floated exhausted in the middle of the river. Attentive skippers brought them safely back to shore.
Several patrols from the Linz police were sent to the Nibelung Bridge around 6:40 p.m. Monday because two girls were swimming in the Danube, clinging to the southern pier of the Nibelung Bridge and screaming for help. When they arrived at the site, the two young people, a 16-year-old from the Mödling district and a 16-year-old from the Baden district, were seen swimming at the bridge pier.
lifebuoy thrown
A private boat was already aware of the emergency and initiated the rescue. The boat crew threw them a life belt, which they grabbed. With this ring they were pulled away against the strong current. The two were brought to safety via the emergency ladder of another private boat and safely handed over to the emergency services on land.
No more power
Both stated that they were on a school trip in Linz and entered the water at the Danube Beach. They were then swept away by the current and no longer had the strength to make it ashore. They therefore oriented themselves in the direction of the bridge piers in order to hold their ground there.
