The former Brazilian president says “it’s not fair” that they can strip him of his political rights.
The former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro drew the legitimacy of the accusation this Monday strip him of his political rights for a period of eight yearsin a process that resumes today.
Bolsonaro, who is accused of committing “abuse of power” during the 2022 election campaign because his actions undermined confidence in the electoral system, he stated that his intention was the exact opposite, “to protect democracy”.
“Is it fair to revoke someone’s political rights for meeting ambassadors? It is not fair to say that democracy was under attackBolsonaro said in statements to journalists during an appearance at the Sao Paulo regional assembly.
The far-right leader made these statements on the eve of the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) to resume the trial accusing him of “abuse of power” during the election campaign, in which he was defeated by the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The axis of the accusation is a meeting Bolsonaro convened with fifty foreign ambassadors at the presidency’s official residence on July 18, 2022to disqualify the transparency of the electoral system and democracy itself, and who ordered it to be broadcast on public television.
