40 sheep have been discovered in a vacant council flat in Nice, southern France. Presumably the animals were waiting to die there.
The sheep were crammed together in a 50 square meter apartment lined with straw, broadcaster France 3 reported Tuesday. Two men with bloodstained T-shirts were arrested.
Slaughter for sacrifice?
The authorities suspect that the sheep would be illegally slaughtered before the Muslim festival of sacrifice. Police also found a sheep that had already been slaughtered in the apartment, councilor Anthony Borré said. The remaining animals were given to a breeder.
To prevent illegal use of the vacant apartment, the housing association installed a specially secured door. When checked on Friday, the apartment was still empty. On Sunday, police officers stumbled upon the sheep during an operation in the apartment building.
