Following his conviction in May in a civil sexual assault lawsuit, former President Donald Trump is now launching a counterattack. American author E. Jean Carroll has been sued for libel.
A jury in May found it proven that Trump assaulted and sexually assaulted Carroll in a luxury department store in 1996. The jury rejected the rape charge. Shortly after Trump was ordered to pay millions in damages, Carroll announced she would once again take legal action against the ex-president. As a reason, she cited further statements from Trump after the ruling. A federal judge in New York has tentatively set the trial to begin on January 15, 2024.
One of the reasons for this was an interview the author gave to CNN the day after the verdict was announced. During the interview, Carroll was specifically asked about the jury’s unanimous finding that Trump was not guilty of rape, Trump’s counterclaim said. “In response to that specific question, (Carroll) ignored the jury’s finding that (Trump) had not raped her and replied, ‘Oh yes, he did, oh yes, he did.'”
Document affair: long prison sentence threatened
Trump, who is seeking to run as the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election, also faces courts in several other cases — including a criminal court for alleged illegal possession of secret government documents after his term in office. Trump denies all allegations and describes the investigation against him as an attempt by President Joe Biden’s administration to politically neutralize him before the 2024 election. If convicted, Trump faces a long prison sentence.
