US President Joe Biden (80) has made several minor oops lately, often attributed to his age. On Wednesday it was that time again: in a statement about Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, he confused Iraq and Ukraine. The slip of the tongue was a godsend for his political opponents.
When asked by a reporter how recent events have weakened the Russian president, Biden replied on Wednesday: “It’s hard to say, but he’s clearly losing the war in Iraq. He’s losing the war at home” (see tweet below).
“Putin Weakens”
Before leaving for Chicago, Biden addressed journalists in the White House yard, whose questions may have focused on the Wagner mercenary group’s uprising against the Russian military leadership. When asked by a reporter if Putin is weaker today than he was before all these events, Biden said, “I know he is.”
The US president also made it clear that he believes Putin is becoming increasingly isolated worldwide. “He’s become a bit of a pariah around the world.” This does not only apply to NATO and EU countries.
Biden is the oldest US president to date and is seeking a second term. The 80-year-old man keeps making slips of the tongue or other mistakes. These are exploited with taste by the Republicans – as confirmation of their claim that he is not fit for office. Biden opponents shared the slip many times on Twitter.
Lapsus also made George W. Bush
However, Biden is not the first US president to confuse Ukraine with Iraq. His Republican predecessor George W. Bush condemned last year’s “brutal and unjustified” invasion of Iraq. A possibly Freudian mistake that those responsible for the war in Iraq are quick to rectify.
