Solar power from the roof or balcony is booming given the high energy prices. But you can not only generate electricity on a roof, but also hydrogen. Scientists from Germany have presented a corresponding system that could soon be ready for the market.
What looks like an unusually grooved solar cell is what’s known as a photoreactor. Such devices mimic the natural photosynthesis of plants. Using special enzymes, these convert CO2, water and light into oxygen and sugar, which the plant uses as food. This is simulated in the photoreactor to produce hydrogen, synthetic gas or e-fuels. In the professional world, such processes are called “Solar-to-X”. However, until now they only worked in the laboratory and were inefficient and expensive. A breakthrough has now been achieved in Karlsruhe that could revolutionize hydrogen production.
