Pope Francis received Stella Assange on Friday. She is the wife of Julian Assange, founder of the Wikileaks disclosure platform, and has recently expressed serious concerns about her husband’s health. He is held for up to 20 hours a day and visits are very limited.
The mother of two children is currently in Rome to attend some seminars.
The US accuses Julian Assange, who has been imprisoned in Britain for four years, of stealing and publishing secret materials from military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, endangering the lives of informants. Supporters see him as a courageous journalist who exposed war crimes.
The legal back and forth over a possible extradition of Assange to the US has been going on for years. While the British government has given the green light for extradition in principle, Assange and his supporters plan to appeal through other legal avenues.
