Two members of the Austrian armed forces are currently stationed at the UN mission MINUSMA in the capital Bamako. In addition, four military personnel are working in Mali as part of the EU training mission EUTM. This mission is not affected by the decision of the Security Council.
Military junta intensifies cooperation with Russia
Mali’s military junta, which is working more closely with Russia, had demanded the immediate withdrawal of all 12,000 UN peacekeepers in mid-June. The UN mission has been active in Mali since 2012, when Islamist militias invaded the north of the country. They now also terrorize the center of the Sahel state and neighboring states.
After two military coups in 2020/21, Mali is now seeking cooperation with Russia. The Russian mercenary force Wagner is said to be in Mali with up to 2,000 fighters, although Colonel Assimi Goïta’s junta officially speaks only of trainers.
