Pride Bombing – Chats show interest in building a bomb

Date:

After three young men were taken into custody two weeks ago on suspicion of a planned attack in Vienna for the rainbow parade (Vienna Pride) and have since been released, evaluations of their mobile phones show explosive details.

In a chat with an unknown user, the 14-year-old asked how to build a bomb and how to activate it with a phone. He also addressed the problem of not being able to aim properly due to poor eyesight. But no plans of attack were found there.

Questions about components for explosives
Through the courier service “Threema”, the teenager asked an unknown user what parts he needed to build an explosive device. The suspect received a link from that user with detailed instructions. However, initial evaluations do not indicate that he put his interest in bomb-building into practice or that an attack on the Vienna Pride parade was planned.

In general, apart from a photo sent by the 20-year-old to another person suggesting a negative attitude towards the LGBTIQ community, these do not show any content related to the community or the parade.

Assault rifle instructions found
In addition to instructions on how to make bombs, the youngest boy’s mobile phone also contained a manual for an AK-47 assault rifle, an extensive document on traveling into Islamic State territory and another document with tips on how to support jihad.

“He wanted to satisfy his curiosity,” said Andreas Schweitzer, the 14-year-old’s lawyer. “It’s important to ask yourself why he’s doing this so you can take countermeasures if necessary.” He was convinced again that his mandate had not planned an attack and that he did not know the other two either.

In addition to the 14-year-old Viennese, a 17- and 20-year-old brother couple from St. Pölten were also taken into custody on the day of the Pride parade. The eldest was released on the same day, the 17 and 14 year olds were released for a week. All three are being investigated for terrorist organization and criminal organization.

Images with IS symbols on mobile phones
The evaluation of the brothers’ mobile phones revealed a large number of images with IS symbols. These include images of an IS signet ring, religious fighters and numerous IS symbols, but also images of alleged executions.

Schweitzer also renewed his criticism of the work of the DSN. The house searches and thus the mobile phones of the three were only obtained on the basis of the results of a foreign partner service, which, pursuant to a provision in the Police Cooperation Act, should not have been passed on to the public prosecutor’s office without the partner service’s permission. So the entry was not legal.

“If you want more powers, you should go to the legislature, but not try to get something that has already been rejected by the Constitutional Court with media-effective appearances,” he said of the discussion of access rights to courier services for the Austrian Constitutional Service . DSN director Haijawi-Pirchner made this request months ago. It flared up again the day after Pride and hasn’t ebbed since.
