New cars damaged – warnings ignored: car transporter got stuck

Date:

A Romanian truck driver drove a total of seven new cars at the airport in Klagenfurt on Wednesday afternoon and apparently blindly followed his navigation system…

“The 58-year-old ignored the repeatedly announced driving ban for trucks over 3.5 tonnes and ignored the height warning for the underpass at the Annabichl cemetery,” police said. “That is why he crashed the railing of his driver’s cabin and the first loaded car into the bottom layer of the railway underpass and became stuck.” According to his own information, his navigation system had led him there.

Serious consequential damage due to accident
The crash not only seriously damaged the first car, but also pushed it into a second vehicle, which also sustained damage. “The bolts on the front of the lift ruptured, causing it to tip forward and completely damaging a car on the lower level of the transport vehicle,” police said in describing the situation. “The vehicles had to be rescued by the Klagenfurt professional fire brigade, while the rescue team took the driver to the Klagenfurt clinic.”

The bridge was closed until checked by the ÖBB bridge master and was reopened to monitor traffic when he could detect no static electricity hazard. It is not yet known exactly what damage the truck driver or his navigation system caused.
