Donald Trump had also formally dismissed the other charges in the documents affair in court. At a hearing Thursday in a Florida state court, Trump, as expected, pleaded not guilty through his lawyers without himself being present.
Trump had previously requested in a written court document not to appear for the reading of the new indictments – and had already made it clear that he was also “innocent” on the additional charges, US media reported.
The Republican was indicted in June in the documents affair because he kept government documents, some of which were top secret, at his private property Mar-a-Lago in Florida and did not return them when asked.
He was accused of illegally storing highly sensitive information from his time as president (2017 to 2021). The 77-year-old presidential candidate and his aide, Walt Nauta, have also been charged with conspiracy to obstruct investigations. Both pleaded “not guilty”. In mid-June, Trump appeared in court in Miami.
New allegations at the end of July
At the end of July, the original indictment was expanded with new allegations. Trump would have tried with the help of employees to make material disappear from surveillance cameras in Mar-a-Lago. In addition to Trump and Nauta, a third man was accused: Carlos De Oliveira, administrator of Mar-a-Lago. The three had attempted to “alter, destroy, disfigure and conceal” potential evidence, the report said.
According to media reports, Nauta appeared in court on Thursday and also pleaded “not guilty” given the additional charges. De Oliveira, on the other hand, had not yet been informed of the charges against him due to formal obstacles.
