In Bologna, Italy, a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour applies from today, Saturday. With the new regulation there should be no more road fatalities. “I have promised to immediately do my utmost to put an end to this tragedy,” the mayor of Bologna wrote.
Last year there were 22 deaths on the streets of Bologna, this year there were 13. According to mayor Matteo Lepore, this is a significant increase compared to the time before the corona pandemic. The clear majority of accidents (73 percent) occur in urban areas, mainly due to increased speed, neglect of pedestrian crossing priority and distracted driving.
The speed limit has now been lowered so that there will be no more road deaths in the Italian city in the future. Other major European cities served as examples. “In Bologna we will drive a little slower and be safer. Among the meetings that impressed me were meetings with the parents and relatives of some very young road victims (…),” the mayor wrote in a letter to the city.

“Remember that the leading cause of death in Italy among young people under 50 is road accidents,” Lepore stressed. Speeding is not always the direct cause, but can exacerbate the consequences of other violations. Those who do not adhere to the new speed limit need not fear any consequences for the time being. The fines will not be imposed until 2024. The highways of Bologna are excluded from the regulation.
