Tens of thousands of people demonstrated against violence in Serbia on Saturday evening. Left and liberal opposition parties and citizens’ movements had called for the rallies. After the two disasters in May, 108,833 illegal weapons were also surrendered.
As a police spokeswoman reported, about 82,400 small arms, about 26,500 mines and other explosives and 4.2 million rounds of ammunition were transferred. The government had previously called on the approximately seven million inhabitants to hand in illegal weapons with impunity.
Tens of thousands of people also demonstrated in Belgrade and at least eight other places in Serbia on Saturday evening. The protest was aimed, among other things, against the government and against tabloid media, which would promote a climate of violence. In Belgrade, protesters flocked to the headquarters of private broadcaster Pink TV, accusing them of inciting violence and hatred. Left and liberal opposition parties and citizens’ movements had called for the rallies.
May rages
In May, two massacres shocked Serbian society. On May 3, a 13-year-old student shot and killed nine classmates and a security guard at his school in central Belgrade. A day later, in a village near Belgrade, a young man took up arms and shot eight people. There is no connection between the two actions.
