“No Objectives Accomplished” – Shoigu breaks his silence after the uprising

Date:

The Kremlin continues to try to downplay the importance of the mercenary uprising led by Yevgeny Prigozhin. The power structure has not changed, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed days ago. Now Prigozhin’s intimate enemy, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, has also commented on the suppressed uprising.

“The provocation had no effect on the actions of the armed forces group (in the Ukraine),” Shoigu said at a ministerial meeting on Monday. The frontline soldiers continued to do their job. The enemy had “reached its objective in no direction of attack”.

While the founder of the mercenary group Wagner Schoigu has repeatedly mentioned the name when it comes to criticism of the military leadership in recent weeks and months, the minister did not name the mercenary leader or his company as responsible for the uprising in his speech. Instead, he spoke of an attempt to destabilize the situation in Russia. “These plans failed mainly because the members of the armed forces remained true to their oath and their duty,” said the 68-year-old.

Shoigu puts Ukraine’s ‘territorial gain’ into perspective
“Ukrainian leaders, however – under pressure from Western allies – insist that the offensive continue despite significant losses,” Shoigu said, referring to the latest reports from Kiev of “territorial gains” in eastern and southern Ukraine.

The Wagner Rebellion
Last Saturday, the mercenaries occupied the Russian army headquarters in Rostov-on-Don in southwestern Russia for several hours and then advanced towards Moscow. The uprising ended the same evening with an agreement whereby Prigozhin went into exile in Belarus.

The insurgents escaped with impunity, but the future of the mercenaries seems uncertain. In Russia, news sites related to the company were blocked this week. Prigozhin has not spoken publicly since Monday.
