A young man who wanted to kill Queen Elizabeth II is said to have been inspired by the “Star Wars” movies. The prosecutor said on Wednesday that he wanted to create a new empire and therefore targeted the queen as “figurehead of the royal family”.
The 21-year-old’s thinking is shaped in part by the fantasy world of “Star Wars.” Despite his repeated allusions to sci-fi characters, he can distinguish between reality and fiction, a court in London said.
The man had already pleaded guilty to planning an attack on the Queen on December 25, 2021. He had entered the grounds of Windsor Castle with a loaded crossbow and was soon overpowered by security forces. “I’m here to kill the Queen,” he said when he was arrested. The late Queen was staying at Windsor Castle at the time.
Revenge for the Amritsar massacre (1919)?
According to the prosecution, the accused was seeking revenge for the 1919 Amritsar massacre, when British colonial troops opened fire on protesters in the Indian city of Amritsar, killing hundreds. In a video that the then 19-year-old sent to acquaintances, he said he was an Indian Sikh and announced that he wanted to kill the Queen.
The suspect is charged with breaching the Treason Act 1842. The maximum sentence is seven years, the actual sentence will be announced on Thursday.
