Necessary for medication – blood plasma scarce: donors urgently needed!

Date:

The number of plasma donations in Austria has fallen sharply since the start of the corona pandemic. However, blood plasma is urgently needed for the production of vital medicines, the association of the pharmaceutical industry (Pharmig) called on the population to donate. The continued decline in plasma donations in recent years cannot yet be made up for. In 2022, 394,791 liters of blood plasma were donated, 21 percent less than in 2019.

“Since vital medicines are sometimes based on blood plasma, plasma donations are extremely necessary and must be made in greater numbers to ensure safe delivery,” said Pharmig Secretary General Alexander Herzog, who called for one of the 23 plasma donation centers to go.

“Each of us may be in a position to depend on such a drug at any time, either as part of hospital accident treatment or as part of ongoing therapy.”

“The production of these drugs usually takes between six and 12 months, from starting material to completion and official testing. Because of this lead time, it is of the utmost importance that the population donates blood plasma continuously,” explains Herzog.

In Austria, all people between the ages of 18 and 60 are allowed to donate plasma. For example, the centers are listed at www.plasmaspendende.at/plasmazentren-oesterreich.
