Ancient Roman marble head discovered in Rome

Date:

Rome continues to return valuable evidence of its past: an intact marble head has been found during excavations in the center of the Italian capital in Piazza Augusto Imperatore.

Restorers are busy cleaning and examining the find, Mayor Gualtieri announced the find on Facebook. The marble head was found Thursday and appears to represent a young woman, as can be seen from the hair and delicate facial features.

The photo published by Gualtieri shows the marble head (pictured above) still covered in dirt and debris. The Augusto Imperatore Square is currently under reconstruction under the direction of the architect Francesco Cellini.
