Melba Mebane started out as an “elevator girl” in an American department store and steadily worked her way up the ranks. She retires at the age of 90 – without a single sick leave.
At the age of 16, Melba Mebane got her first job at Dillard’s Department Store in Tyler, Texas. After only six months, she was promoted to the cosmetics department. There she quickly became the star of the sales team, according to her son Terry Mebane: “She was the best and most popular employee at Dillard’s because she always filled in for sick colleagues.” Mebane also established close contact with its customers through personal advice. Her regular customers came not only to buy perfume from her, but also to get advice on various everyday problems.
“Was a role model to everyone”
That also impressed department store manager James Saenz: “She was our star. The quality of her customer service was so high right to the end that she was a role model for everyone else.” This rendered her virtually irredeemable as many of ‘her’ customers only wanted to be served by her.
It was only at the beginning of this year that Mebane started having health problems due to her advanced age and Mebane decided to quit her job after 74 years. “I couldn’t bear to miss even one working day due to illness. I never did my job for pay. It was where God called me to go!”
