Admission tests running – Eight applicants per place for medical studies

Date:

The admission tests for medical studies in Austria will be held on Friday. Some 15,400 people have applied, which is an average of eight candidates per place.

You can study in Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz and Linz. Most applications come from Vienna, where ten people are in one place. In Innsbruck there are eight people per study place, in Graz and Linz seven each. A total of 1850 places are allocated. Last year, slightly more people applied for medical studies.

In human medicine, at least 95 percent of the places go to candidates from the EU and at least 75 percent to candidates with an Austrian Matura certificate. In dentistry, places are awarded to those with the best test results, regardless of their nationality. New this time are extra questions about emotional and social skills, which means that the test of approximately eight hours (including lunch break) has been extended slightly.

Social skills are tested
“Of course, the fundamental question to be asked is the scientific competence of applicants for medical studies, as well as their ability to remember and learn (…),” said Antia Rieder, Vice Rector of Education at MedUni Vienna, about “Krone”. Assessing the mentioned social skills is difficult, she noted. This time, three task groups focus on social skills. Here, for example, situations are described and answers are given, where the candidates have to choose one.

Recently, Lower Austrian governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) brought another change to the game. According to her, only students who are allowed to study the subject in their home country are allowed to participate. This would deny German ‘numerus clausus refugees’ a place at the university.
