In recent years, vitamin D has also become increasingly popular outside of medical prescriptions. An improved immune system and a protective effect against atherosclerosis were promised. However, according to studies, this is not the case.
For example, vitamin D does not prevent cardiovascular disease such as stroke or the need for bypass surgery or cardiac catheterization. Such a result was recently published in the renowned British Medical Journal. Between 2014 and 2020, 21,316 people between the ages of 60 and 84 participated in the study. After random selection, 10,622 participants received 60,000 international units of vitamin D3 once a month for five years and another 10,653 took a placebo tablet once a month.
The result: the frequency of cardiovascular disease was six percent in the vitamin D group, and 6.6 percent in the placebo group. However, the difference was not statistically significant. Only hospital stays due to heart attacks were about a fifth (19 percent) lower in the vitamin D group. Scientists repeatedly came to similar conclusions – ie no effect of vitamin D on the frequency of strokes, heart attacks and cardiovascular diseases.
There is also no effect with regard to Covid-19. “There are currently no arguments that could justify vitamin D supplementation in people with adequate vitamin D status for the purpose of preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection or reducing the severity of Covid-19 disease,” said it from the German Association for Food Sciences. Science as early as 2021. During the Covid 19 pandemic, both vitamin D and other substances were sometimes touted as help against serious illnesses or for prevention.
Only affects bone metabolism
Only a positive effect on bone metabolism is recognized and only in certain people. Experts also warned that an overdose with vitamin D preparations should be avoided. Side effects are kidney stones, kidney calcifications and disorders of the cardiovascular system. In February, the Austrian Association for Bone and Mineral Metabolism (ÖGKM) stated that vitamin D administration for all healthy people cannot be advocated.
