A Dutch woman found herself in an uncomfortable and especially dangerous situation late Thursday afternoon in Tyrol’s Zillertal: The 21-year-old was climbing a via ferrata in Hainzenberg when she lost her strength halfway through and a thunderstorm broke out. The young woman had to be rescued by the mountain rescue service under the most adverse circumstances.
Before any tour, you should carefully study the weather forecast, experts advise as a mantra. The 21-year-old Dutchman probably missed it on Thursday. Around 4 p.m., the young woman started her ascent on the “Gerlossteinwand via ferrata”.
Thunderclouds gathered, heavy rain began
Shortly after 5pm, the 21-year-old had already conquered about half the climb when she suddenly lost her strength, dark storm clouds gathered and it started to rain heavily. Startled, the woman took cover under a ledge and called 911.
The mountain rescuers from Zell am Ziller and an alpine police officer then drove their emergency vehicles to the area of the Gerlossteinbahn mountain station. In heavy rain and cold, the emergency services climbed a footpath and then via ferrata to the woman.
Shortly after 6:30 p.m., the woman was finally made safe – she was hypothermic. With the support of the mountain rescuers, the 21-year-old was able to climb to the top on his own. Then she was brought down unharmed.
